BRICKWORKS SAYS

This stylish home oozes charm with beautifully preserved Victorian features, colourful interiors and a private, sun-trap garden.

Large bay windows and a beautiful, working Victorian fireplace make for homey vibes and a perfect spot for cosy evenings or entertaining friends. A few steps down the hallway, the large bedroom looks out onto the sunny garden. While at the back, a smart and recently retiled bathroom sits adjacent to the cottage-style kitchen-diner. Airy and sunny and big enough to take a table, the kitchen has double doors that open onto the west-facing garden, which overflows with apple and jasmine blossom in the spring and summer months.

Drayton Road is tucked away from the main thoroughfares yet remains a short hop away from West Green Road, Tottenham High Road, and Green Lanes, offering a bevvy of indie cafes, restaurants, shops, and pubs. The nearby parklands of Downhills Park, Lordship Recreation Ground and Bruce Castle Park are welcome spaces for exercise, downtime or dog walks. And with overground and tube stations nearby, from Bruce Grove or Seven Sisters, central London is within easy reach.

THE OWNER SAYS

We love living in Bruce Grove’s lively, tight-knit community with fantastic neighbours. The house provides tons of space, storage, and natural light, while the kitchen and garden are popular spaces for parties, dinner with friends and barbecues. In recent years, we have renovated the kitchen and bathroom and decorated throughout to bring the house’s original Victorian features to life. The open fireplace in the front is a feature we love – perfect during the winter months.

There’s plenty to do either on our doorstep or within easy reach. Lordship Recreation Ground and Bruce Castle Park provide tons of space, perfect for dog lovers. Areas like Hampstead Heath and Epping Forest are a bike ride away, and the nearby canals lead up to Lea Valley or down to East London. Tottenham provides a super range of pubs, cafes and restaurants, and public transport to both east and central London is incredibly convenient.

1 Bruce Castle

Named after Robert the Bruce, former owner of its grounds, this remarkable Grade-I listed manor house has a long and storied history. Its owners include Henry VIII’s “Groom of the Bedchamber” and Sir Rowland Hill, inventor of the postage stamp. Queen Elizabeth I, Charles Dickens and Charles Babbage all paid visits to the castle. And on its grounds is the magnificent Bruce Castle Oak, runner-up for England’s Tree of the Year in 2018!

2 Cinnamon Leaf Food Hall

Family-owned by siblings Kiera and Lewis (and some others), Cinnamon Leaf Food Hall is on a mission to promote healthy eating and sustainable living, with a focus on Afro-Caribbean cuisine and culture. It opened in 2020—right in the middle of the COVID–19 pandemic—and is going from strength to strength.

3 The Bluecoats

“The big pub on the high road serving wicked food, showing the football and providing general good vibes,” this cosy indie boozer serves up Time Out’s best burgers in London. It also has a heated garden, regular pop-up nights (Taco Tuesdays! Wing Wednesdays!) and too many beers and ciders to count.

4 Luna D’Amore

Say hello to your new local, and very tasty, woodfired pizza takeaway. This lot aren’t afraid to break the boundaries of pizza-making with regularly changing specials, but purists will be satisfied with the freshness and delicious dough.

5 The Beehive

Inside, this “community pub” has all the usual diversions—pool table, board games, darts. But the huge covered beer garden is the real draw. Open all year round, it’s as buzzy as the pub’s name implies.
