BRICKWORKS SAYS
Smack-bang in E1, this apartment is ideal for anyone who wants to be in the thick of the action. Situated on the seventh floor of a modern development on the edge of Spitalfields and Whitechapel, the flat faces southwest and soaks up the sun, which streams through the floor-to-ceiling window in the bedroom and the living room’s balcony doors. You can breathe in the open skies, look down on the bustle below, and enjoy views of the city stretching out before you.
The owners have brought the space to life with audacious colour. The sunny yellow living space is accented by bold red, and the bedroom in deep green makes it feel like you've stepped into a soothing hideaway. Everything has been designed with practicality in mind. The contemporary kitchen has ample space to house all your appliances, and there's not one but two good-sized storage cupboards for all of life's other bits.
Alie Street is at the nexus of some of London's most creative and coveted districts. Dip into some culture at the Whitechapel Art Gallery or the Gilbert & George Centre, sample the spicy delights on Brick Lane or shop till you drop at Spitalfields Market. You could never tire of the gastronomic options or the choice of the East End's finest pubs, but should you ever want a change of scene, Shoreditch and Hackney are just down the road.
THE OWNERS SAY
This super-central flat has all the best of London's diversity on your doorstep––yet up on the seventh-floor corner, it's always been so quiet. It's like a refuge, made to feel all the more so by knowing so much life is right there.
We make ample use of the balcony. We love cooking and found the open kitchen a lovely place to cook and invite friends over. For such a cosy flat, the bedroom is bigger than usual. We spent lockdowns in here and never felt claustrophobic. Indeed, we felt ensconced and made many happy memories in this little den of ours.
With Spitalfields two streets away, it feels very much a part of that milieu. Spitalfields Market is our regular haunt. We walk everywhere. I often walk up through the back streets of the East End, grab a coffee, pop into a bookshop, and then end up at Arnold Circus to sit out and read. The community is so diverse. It's hard to understate just how wonderful that is. You're at this intersection point of so many different aspects of London and feel like you are part of each of them.

1 Whitechapel Gallery
Exhibitions at this wonderful gallery space are often on the more challenging and side, which makes it a fabulous place to experience emerging talent. Still, it’s a stalwart of the contemporary art scene, and for good reason. For more than a century this beautiful gallery has premiered exhibitions from world-class modern masters such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Frida Kahlo, to contemporaries such as Sophie Calle, Gilbert & George and Mark Wallinger. Always welcoming, there are great talks and gatherings, private views and events. Plus while the bookshop is small, there's always a gem to find and after that you can have a very decent coffee and bite to eat in the café…oh and its free entry – one of the last bastions that is.
2 Wilton's Music Hall
A really wonderful, historic, old music hall dating back to 1859, running a mixed programme of live music and theatre. The building is a stunning mix of atmospheric faded grandeur and charm. After being on the edge of demolition for years, it has now been finally restored and opened up to its full potential, all a labour of love which has finally paid off. Last year the project was awarded Building of the Year 2016. This place is really worth a visit, even just for a drink in the magnificent Mahogany Bar and a delicious pizza from the resident Gatherers menu.
3 St John Bread & Wine
It’s good to have a restaurant you can rely on for a comfortable interior, good quality, simple food and delicious wine. This place really has stood the test of time, they are consistent in everything they do, and it really works, whether its breakfast lunch or dinner, its all good, particularly the welsh rarebit, and donuts to die for! It’s also very hard not to come out with a bottle of their house red under your arm.
4 Brick Lane
Well-known for being the place to go for a good curry, there are also countless bars and restaurants lining the bustling street which runs from Whitechapel all the way to Shoreditch. There is a weekly market with an eclectic mix of goods for sale, street food vendors, vintage clothing shops and street art. Something for everyone, we think.
5 Rinkoff Bakery
Whatever tickles your fancy, this iconic bakery has the goods to make you smile. Whether you’re in the mood for challah, sourdough or Danish pastries, you’re covered, And don’t even try leaving before you try their heavenly ‘crodoughs’.
